What does your home say about you?

February 25, 2017

What does your home say about you? Have you ever walked into a home for the first time and thought “I would not have pictured this person living in this house”?

A first impression includes the first time someone walks into your home.  An impression is created when you look at the décor and this certainly includes the lighting.

Your choice in lighting should reflect the style of your home or its individual rooms but your choices should also reflect your style and personality.  There's an abundance of choices in lighting, and choosing what's right for you can be a bit daunting. You should, therefore, choose pieces you love to ensure that these go the distance.

Choose for:

  • functionality,

  • practicality,

  • cost,

  • design,

  • according to existing environment.

Stuck for ideas? Look at your room and visualise the areas you want to highlight or the areas that you spend the most time at. Then think about whether these areas need to be lit. Then choose a type of light that may be suitable. Do this for each of the areas in that room, and make a list. Then imagine all the pieces placed in those areas. Like what you see? Make decisions based on your visual interpretation.

If you need some inspiration, there are a range of sources you can use to help with your choices.  The internet of course can provide you with many ideas.  Consider visiting a home decorating concept store or any antique stores in your area as these are likely to have some pieces to inspire your choices.

Antique chandeliers can be suitable in many settings as can more modern lighting – which style is ‘more you’?   The sky is the limit but my tip is to choose a piece that means something for both the room and for you.
